City of Brampton to experience Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

BRAMPTON, ON – On Monday, April 8, parts of southern Ontario will experience a Total Solar Eclipse. This happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun, causing night-like darkness during the day. The Total Solar Eclipse will last a few hours beginning around 2 pm and concluding around 4:30 pm. In Brampton, at approximately 3:19 pm, the sun will be 99% covered by the moon.

Residents are reminded that looking directly at a solar eclipse is dangerous because the light from the sun is very intense. It can lead to serious eye problems such as partial or complete loss of vision. If residents decide to view the solar eclipse, it is important to do so using the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified (ISO 12312-2) eclipse glasses, which block over 99.99% of the sun’s light or an eclipse projector.

Eclipse glasses must be worn during all times of the eclipse, including before and after totality to avoid eye injuries. Sunglasses are not safe to use during an eclipse. It is not safe to look at the sun through a camera lens (including phone camera), telescope, binoculars or any other optical device.
