Brampton is committed to being a leading age-friendly community through policies, programs, and investments such as well-designed outdoor spaces and public buildings, a renowned transit system with affordable and accessible service, the promotion of civic participation, and ensuring adequate housing options for all.
The City has a diverse and growing population. According to Census Canada, approximately 27 percent of residents are 19 or under and Brampton's senior population rose 40% between 2011 and 2016 to 66,270. In 2021, nearly 90,000 seniors call Brampton home.
In June 2019, Council unanimously endorsed its first ever Age-Friendly Strategy and Action Plan that provides a framework to move the City forward in its commitment to being an age-friendly community. Since its endorsement, implementation of the Action Plan has been guided by 55 defined action items relating to affordable housing, transportation, accessibility, social isolation, and civic participation.
The Plan was developed with extensive community engagement and is based on best practices. As the City moves forward, effective evaluation of implementation efforts will be essential, with regular community updates.
In 2021, Brampton satisfied the requirements to obtain its certificate as a member of the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Communities Network, the first in Peel!
