Launched in 2023, the MedTech Task Force united leaders from industry, academia, healthcare and government around a shared vision for the future of medical innovation in Brampton. Through this collaborative effort, the Task Force helped position Brampton as an emerging hub for health technology, supporting research, commercialization and skilled job creation for the community.

Partnerships driving innovation and growth

The MedTech Task Force fostered strong partnerships across sectors, including Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), William Osler Health System, Sheridan College and Algoma University, industry leaders and innovation organizations. Brampton-based companies actively contributing to this work included Dynacare, Boston Scientific, Sun Pharma, The Stevens Company and Medtronic.

Brampton’s health and life sciences sector continues to grow through tangible investments and advancements, including:

  • Sun Pharma: Investing $30 million to expand its Brampton operations, reinforcing a 40-year commitment to the city.
  • The Stevens Company: Introducing AutoStore robotics to modernize and strengthen healthcare supply chains.
  • TMU School of Medicine: Opened in September 2025, a historic milestone as the first new medical school in the Greater Toronto Area in more than 100 years. The 250,000 sq ft facility integrates education, research and clinical care, representing a transformative investment in Brampton’s future.
  • Peel Memorial Hospital: Advancing construction of a new patient tower and 24-hour emergency department with up to 250 beds, improving access to care for residents.
  • Vessl Prosthetics: Scaling medical technology after graduating from the Brampton Venture Zone (BVZ), supported by a $6.5 million provincial innovation fund.
  • Dynacare: Investing approximately $4.65 million in advanced laboratory and diagnostic equipment to enhance local operations and patient services.

These initiatives reflect a growing ecosystem where innovation translates into real-world impact for residents, patients and businesses.

Through this work, the Task Force strengthened connections between research, education and industry while deepening collaboration across Brampton’s innovation ecosystem, including hubs such as the BVZ, with 10 more expected this year, further building a pipeline of local innovation.

Advancing wet lab space to unlock future innovation

Building on this momentum, the Task Force identified a critical need to expand innovation infrastructure, including wet lab space to support research and commercialization.

The initiative supported a strategic review led by CBRE and Santis Health to assess demand and opportunity for wet lab facilities in Brampton. The study confirmed strong interest from institutional and industry partners and underscored the essential role of lab space in enabling research, startup growth and commercialization.

These findings are informing site selection and funding opportunities, with continued collaboration between the City, TMU and healthcare partners.

As part of this progress, TMU presented a proposal for a Wet Lab and Diabetes Innovation Hub to advance innovation, economic development and community health outcomes. Council directed staff to work with TMU to engage provincial and federal partners to help position the project for external funding and investment.

Strengthening Brampton’s role in Ontario’s life sciences sector

Brampton is part of Ontario’s growing life sciences sector, home to more than 1,300 companies and 22,500 workers across the province.

Work through the MedTech Task Force enhanced connections between local industry, healthcare and academic partners while advancing planning for critical infrastructure needed to support research and commercialization.

With assets including a community research hospital, a diverse population suited for clinical trials and access to skilled talent, Brampton is well positioned to support continued growth and deliver long-term benefits for residents.
