BRAMPTON, ON – The City of Brampton is introducing several program updates, regulatory changes and operational improvements that will take effect on January 1, 2026. These changes support community safety, enhance service delivery and ensure residents and businesses are aware of their responsibilities heading into the new year. Below is an overview of the key updates coming into effect in the new year and what residents need to know.
Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) Pilot Program Enhancements
What’s changing:
The City is expanding and strengthening its Residential Rental Licensing Pilot Program. Beginning January 1, 2026, all rental property owners across Brampton will be required to renew or apply for a licence annually. All new and renewal applications will continue to be free. The program is also being extended to continue for another three years.
What residents need to do:
- Landlords must apply for or renew their RRL licence before renting units.
- All new and renewing landlords must complete an online learning module to showcase their understanding of the City’s rental regulations before being issued a licence.
Increased penalties for By-law Violations
What’s changing:
Starting January 1, 2026, by-law fines in Brampton are increasing, including parking, property standards, snow clearing, rental housing and other enforcement areas. The updated fine structure introduces escalating penalties ranging from $50 for first offences to up to $1,500 for subsequent offences, supporting stronger deterrence and improved community safety.
What residents need to do:
- Get familiar with the by-laws. It’s the best way to avoid receiving any fines.
- Address violations promptly to avoid higher penalties for repeated non-compliance.
- Visit brampton.ca/bylaws for more information.
Brampton Fire and Emergency and Services
What’s changing:
Beginning January 1, 2026, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms will be required beside all sleeping areas and on every storey of the home.
What residents need to do:
Residents are encouraged to take the following safety actions:
- Install working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms beside all sleeping areas and on every storey of the home.
- Test CO alarms monthly.
- Replace batteries once per year.
- Replace CO alarms in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Have fuel-burning appliances inspected and cleaned yearly by a licensed technician.
