In 2023, the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) launched a province-wide campaign to raise awareness about the life-saving importance of working smoke alarms. The result was Test Your Smoke Alarm Day and the annual “Saved By The Beep!” public education campaign, held every September 28.

In that same year, Ontario experienced its highest number of fire fatalities in 20 years. In far too many of these tragedies, investigators found there were no working smoke alarms in the home.

Every month, pledge to test your smoke alarms and encourage others to do the same by sharing this important message on your social media platforms with the hashtag #SavedByTheBeep. Testing your smoke alarm takes just 30 seconds and should be done once a month. Let us remember for you - take the pledge, and we’ll send monthly reminders straight to your inbox.​
