Celebrate Safely: Seasonal Fire Safety

BBQ Safety/Outdoor Cooking

  • Keep BBQs at least 1 metre away from fences, railings, sheds, and exterior walls.
  • Never BBQ or cook in the garage or shed
  • Always open the lid before lighting a gas BBQ.
  • Check hoses and connections for leaks before each use.
  • Never leave a lit BBQ unattended
  • Use long-handled grilling tools for plenty of clearance from heat and flames when cooking.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area. Have 1 metre “kid-free zone” around the grill.
  • Keep a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Allow BBQ and Outdoor Cooking Appliances to cool completely before storage
  • Regularly remove grease buildup and keep equipment and area clean

Open - Air Burning (Brampton Rules & Requirements)

  • Open‑air burning is not permitted in Brampton unless it meets specific exemptions or you have an approved permit. This restriction applies to outdoor fireplaces, chimineas, bonfires, and similar wood‑burning appliances.
  • Gas‑fueled appliances (natural gas or propane fire tables, heaters, and fireplaces) are allowed and do not require a permit, as long as they are CSA/ULC‑approved and used according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Visit Fire Permits and Inspections for more information
  • Learn more about the Open Air Burning By Law

Indoor Burning - Celebrations/Rituals

  • Indoor burning should only occur in a properly installed, vented, and well‑maintained fireplace or wood‑burning stove. Avoid all other forms of indoor burning, including small ceremonial fires. Indoor fires outside approved appliances create hazards the building was not designed to handle.
  • Use flameless or electric alternatives for rituals, celebrations, and cultural practices.
  • Use candles, incense, and ceremonial items in stable, non‑flammable holders.
  • Keep all candles away from curtains, decorations, bedding, and furniture.
  • Never leave burning candles or incense unattended. Keep children and pets away from candles, incense, matches, lighters, and anything that gets hot.

Fireworks (Brampton Rules and Safety)

  • Fireworks are prohibited in Brampton; the sale, possession, and discharge of fireworks without authorization is not permitted under the Fireworks By-law.
  • Unauthorized fireworks can cause fires, injuries, property damage, and significant risk to the community.
  • Fireworks can produce sparks, embers, and debris that easily ignite grass, roofs, decks, and nearby structures.
  • Noise from fireworks can distress pets, wildlife, and vulnerable residents.
  • Anyone found selling, using, or discharging fireworks illegally may enforcement action.
  • Consider alternatives such as glow sticks, LED wands, or community‑run displays.

Smoking Safety Outdoors

  • Use deep, sturdy ashtrays or designated butt receptacles.
  • Never toss cigarette butts into grass, planters, mulch, or forested areas.
  • Ensure cigarettes are fully out before disposal.
  • Avoid smoking near dry vegetation during hot or windy conditions.
