Fire Prevention Week 2024

October 5 to 12, 2024 - Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!

Having working smoke alarms in the home reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent).

Many home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present or not working.

  • Smoke alarms are not installed at all
  • Smoke alarm batteries are removed
  • Smoke alarms are dismantled/removed
  • Smoke alarms are expired, therefore not functioning properly

The "KNOW" about smoke alarms:

  • Installing working smoke alarms on every storey of your home (including the basement) and outside all sleeping areas
  • Install smoke alarms in the bedroom area
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities
  • Push and hold the test button monthly on all your smoke alarms
  • Replace batteries and back-up batteries at least once a year, and/or when the low battery indicator activates
