A Youth-Led Open Mic to celebrate National Youth Week from the Cultural Programming Team.

Pass the Mic – Fourth Annual Open Mic for National Youth Week

Run by youth, for youth! This annual open mic night invites youth ages 13 – 24 to share their voices and stories on stage. Whether through poetry, song, rap or comedy, performers are encouraged to showcase their talents and connect with a vibrant community of peers. All genres of performing arts are welcome!

National Youth Week is an annual celebration recognizing the valuable role of young people in building a strong and resilient city and encourages local youth to continue to get involved and give back to the community. This open mic night provides a platform for young people to showcase their talents while empowering youth in self-expression through the performing arts.

In 2022, Pass the Mic was held at LBP Theatre where 13 youth took the stage in front of an audience of almost 60 community members. Performances included rap, vocals, instrumentalists and one featured performance by a local youth poet.

This year, the Heartbeats in Arts & Culture Co-op students plan and deliver the event as part of their program work, creating a space where youth of all backgrounds can engage, connect, and support each other.

Seline Troi

Seline Troi is a 17-year-old self-engineered artist hailing from Brampton, Ontario—a city rich with cultural diversity and creative spirit, which continues to shape his unique approach to music. At an age where many are still figuring things out, Seline is already carving a lane of his own, guided by a deep passion for sound and storytelling. His music reflects both his personal growth and his desire to offer something real to listeners navigating their own journeys.

Seline’s introduction to music was organic. Growing up, melodies became his method of processing the world around him. With a curious mind and an ear for detail, he began experimenting with sounds, recording tracks in his room and learning the intricacies of production, mixing, and engineering on his own. It’s this DIY ethic and self-driven attitude that continue to set him apart in a space saturated with noise.

Heavily inspired by genre-defining artists like Brent Faiyaz and Travis Scott, Seline draws from their atmospheric soundscapes and emotional lyricism, channeling them through his own lens. Brent’s soulful vulnerability and Travis’ genre-blending ambition both serve as north stars in Seline’s evolving sound. But make no mistake—Seline isn’t a copy. He’s building something personal, raw, and entirely his own.

Although he has touched multiple styles in his earlier works, Seline has recently started focusing on RnB—a genre that allows him to dive deep into emotion, texture, and mood. For him, RnB is more than just a sound; it’s a space where he can speak the unsaid, connect with people on a deeper level, and create songs that feel like conversations. Whether it’s late-night thoughts, heartbreak, or moments of clarity, Seline has a gift for capturing feeling in its purest form.

As he explores new sonic directions, collaborates with emerging creatives, and develops his voice, one thing remains constant—Seline Troi is an artist to watch. Rooted in authenticity, driven by emotion, and inspired by greatness, he’s just getting started.
