Council Policies and Administrative Directives

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The City of Brampton has a set of official polices, practices and positions, approved by Council that provides direction to the Corporation. These processes communicate City priorities, provides guidance for present and future decisions, sets standards of performance and services delivery, and articulates principles of acceptable behaviour and actions.

A Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) is a set of step-by-step instructions to help staff carry out routine tasks that operationalize a policy or directive. SOPs aim to achieve efficiency, quality output, uniformity of performance, and safety while reducing miscommunication and failure to comply with rules and regulations.

Council Policies and Administrative Directives will be reviewed and updated a minimum of every 3 years, or more frequently, if required by legislation or business practices to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of the City.

The following are policies and procedures that have been highlighted in the Council Handbook:

​The Municipal Act, 2001 S.O. 2001, c.25, s.270(1) requires that all municipalities adopt and maintain a policy regarding the relationship between Members of Council and staff. ​For more information, click here​.


​To establish the business rules and guidelines with respect to acceptable donations or gifts that organizations, community groups or individuals may wish to make to the City of Brampton. For more information, click here.

​To provide guidelines for employees to assist in upholding the integrity and impartiality of the City’s operations and to act, and be seen to act, in the interest of the City and not for personal gain while maintaining a high standard of ethical, moral and legal conduct. To establish the guidelines for appropriate levels of authorization for expenditures directly related to staff, in order to ensure effective internal controls. For more information, click here.

To provide reimbursement for mileage travelled on a cents-per-kilometre basis, when an employee is required to use their vehicle for Corporate business. For more information, click here.

​To provide governance and awareness for the acceptable use of computers, systems, mobile communication devices, electronic communication, telephones, servers, applications, data, software tools, electronic access accounts, information assets, technology acquisition, technology standards and processes, network resources and the overall Business-Technologies and Infrastructure, at the City in conjunction with its established culture of good ethical behaviour, trust, and integrity. To provide guidelines regarding the authorization and types of expenses that may be incurred by the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Brampton in carrying out their duties as a Member of City Council. For more information, click here​.

To create and maintain a workplace that is free from violence; demonstrating the City’s commitment to preventing and protecting individuals from workplace violence; ensure individuals are aware of what constitutes violence and that violence is unacceptable and incompatible with the values of the City, as well as being a violation of the law; establish the responsibilities of staff in preventing, reporting, investigating and addressing violence; and to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) respecting workplace violence.
