The proposal reimagines Brampton’s civic heart through the creation of two unified, iconic public spaces—Ken Whillans Square and Garden Square—collectively envisioned as the “Flower Squares.” Rooted in Brampton’s identity as the “Flower City,” the design draws on the city’s horticultural legacy to create a compelling civic experience expressed through form, pattern, planting, and architecture.
A rose-petal paving motif anchors both squares, organizing movement and gathering while symbolizing civic pride. Each square is tailored to its context: Ken Whillans is ceremonial and park-adjacent, anchored by the sculptural “Shimmer Stage”, integrated with a digital screen and surrounded by lush berms that preserve mature trees and define informal amphitheatres. Garden Square is urban and active, with the “Rosette Ring”, a suspended LED screen creating a central civic landmark and a new amphitheatre terrace linked to the Rose Theatre.
Together, the squares support performances, everyday use, and seasonal programming, with infrastructure for public art, skating, markets, and gatherings. The design prioritizes accessibility, climate resilience, and sensory richness—offering shade, shelter, light, and biodiversity year-round. A “celebration of yellow” landscape palette expresses joy, pollination, and seasonal change across both sites.
This is a public realm rooted in symbolism and function, created through minimal but impactful interventions, and ready to become Brampton’s most beloved civic destination. The Flower Squares are bold, flexible, and enduring—civic stages for storytelling, culture, and community.
