​​​BRAMPTON, ON – The City of Brampton has updated several by-laws and programs to simplify licensing requirements, strengthen compliance and enhance community safety. These updates include:

Election Sign By-law amendments

The City of Brampton has updated its Election Sign By-law to enhance community safety by maintaining clear visibility for drivers and pedestrians, reducing clutter and litter, protecting the character of neighbourhoods and ensuring election signs are displayed safely and consistently during municipal, provincial and federal elections.

Key changes include:

• Each registered residential unit on private property containing residential units, including Additional Residential Units (ARUs), may display one election sign per candidate or third-party advertiser, consistent with the Municipal Elections Act.
• Election signs displayed on vehicles must now comply with the City's Election Sign By-law. 
• Vehicles displaying election signs are subject to certain restrictions related to sign size and location. Election signs must not obstruct visibility, impede emergency access, create a safety hazard, or be illuminated, animated or digital. 
  

Existing restrictions for election signs not displayed on vehicles remain in effect, including sign size limits and prohibitions on signs placed on public property or in locations that obstruct visibility, emergency access or create safety hazards, as well as illuminated, animated or digital signs.

Stationary Business Licensing and Administrative Penalties By-law Amendments

The City of Brampton has updated its Stationary Business Licensing and Administrative Penalties By-laws to improve consistency across the City's licensing, reduce administrative barriers and enhance compliance.

Key changes include:

• Increase in fine amount for businesses that are in violation of the by-law, such as operating without a business licence. Additionally, introducing graduated administrative penalties for businesses that fail to comply with an Order to Comply. 
• $500 for a first offence
• $750 for a second offence
• $1,000 for each subsequent offence
• ​Updating insurance requirements for licensed short-term rentals, including replacing Commercial General Liability insurance with General Liability insurance while maintaining the minimum $2 million coverage requirements.
• Licensed short-term rental operators and Residential Rental licensees now have 15 days, to notify the City of changes to their required insurance coverage, instead of 10 days.

Enhancing the Driving Instruction Zones program

Following a successful pilot, the City of Brampton has established a permanent Driving Instruction Zones Program, allowing driving instruction in six designated community centre parking lots.

Key changes include:

• The instructor registration requirements and booking process have been removed.
•  Driving instruction is now permitted without restrictions on days or hours of operation.
• Up to five driving instructors may operate at any designated location at the same time.
• Driving instruction continues to be permitted only at designated community centre parking lots.
  

Updated signage will be installed at participating locations.
