On January 22, 2020, the City of Brampton declared a health care emergency and launched its advocacy campaign, “Fair Deal for Brampton”, requesting additional funding from the province to bridge Brampton’s health care gap.
The City is grateful for the Government of Ontario’s commitment to Brampton’s second hospital, marked by a significant milestone in March 2025 with the groundbreaking at William Osler Health System’s (Osler) Peel Memorial, as well as for its support in expanding life-saving cancer services at Osler's Brampton Civic Hospital site
Expansion of Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness into a full hospital
On March 28, 2025, Osler was joined by Premier Doug Ford, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, Members of Provincial Parliament, Mayor Patrick Brown, community partners and donors to break ground on the new Peel Memorial Hospital.
Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness will transform into Brampton’s second hospital. This state-of-the-art facility will help ensure our communities have timely access to high-quality care close to home, when and where they need it.
The new Peel Memorial Hospital will include:
- A 24/7 Emergency Department
- New and enhanced services for seniors
- New and enhanced mental health and addictions services
- Rehabilitation and complex continuing care services
- 250 inpatient beds with space to build one hundred more beds in the future
Early construction began in Spring 2025. Activities include building a temporary access road to support the next stages of construction. In October 2025, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Osler signed a Development Phase Agreement (DPA) with Bird Design-Build Construction Inc., which is now the development partner selected to advance the project requirements, including the design, schedule and pricing.
Expanding Cancer Care Services at Brampton Civic Hospital
Osler provides care and treatment to patients across their cancer journey – prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, recovery, survivorship and end-of-life care.
A notable gap in Brampton’s cancer care services is radiation therapy. Currently, many residents must travel outside the city to access specialized cancer treatments, which can be burdensome for patients and their families.
The next stage of Ontario Government approvals to begin building a comprehensive Cancer Care Centre at Brampton Civic Hospital to meet the growing needs for life-saving cancer care and treatment in our community.
Hospital Levy
Brampton City Council approved the continued one per cent hospital levy to support health care expansion in Brampton. In total, Brampton residents will pay $125 million towards the project.
Welcome to Brampton, TMU School of Medicine!
In January 2023, the City of Brampton and the Government of Ontario made a historical announcement regarding the location of the new Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) School of Medicine.
On September 3, 2025, the TMU School of Medicine opened at the university's new Brampton Campus, located at the Bramalea Civic Centre, at 150 Central Park Drive. The Civic Centre is strategically located within the City’s health and life sciences cluster, and this is a great win for our advocacy to secure fair and equitable health care for our residents.
When operating at full capacity, the TMU School of Medicine will have 94 undergraduate seats in each year of study and 117 post-graduate entry positions to ensure the next generation of health care practitioners can train locally in the city. It will make Brampton the home of a community-centric medical school focused on inclusivity, innovation, and primary care. The school makes Brampton the home to the first new medical school in the GTA in over a hundred years!
