Active School Travel focuses on encouraging families to use active modes of transportation, such as walking, cycling, or the school bus or public transport, to and from school. It aims to improve physical and mental health, while also benefiting the environment.
Active school travel offers residents a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the benefits of cycling, walking, and micromobility, which also enhances students' health and academic performance. For strategies on how to engage parents and caregivers in active school travel, review the
Family School Travel Toolkit. For toolkits and
ideas on how you can enhance active school travel in your school community or take on initiatives to enhance safe school travel, review the
toolkits and resources from the Ontario Active School Travel Network.

Active School Travel in Brampton
The City hosts the
Brampton School Traffic Safety Council (BSTSC) and participates in the
Peel Active and Safe School Routes (PSARTS) Committee to encourage local active school travel and traffic safety. In collaboration with Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR), PSARTS created
an overview of active school travel and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ).
To request a crossing guard or to report safety issues around schools,
contact 311 or submit a
School Site Inspection Request to the BSTSC. The BSTSC will consider matters directly related to school traffic safety and pedestrian education, including the placement of school crossing guards.
Peel District School Board public health nurses have played important roles in supporting the City's
School Routes Program and active school travel programming and campaigns. To pursue participation in active school travel campaigns, contact your local public health nurse or school administrative staff.
