Van Kirk Outfall Stormwater Management Retrofit Project

Purpose

The City of Brampton is planning improvements to the Van Kirk outfall, located northeast of Bovaird Drive West and McLaughlin Road. The project will address erosion concerns, improve stormwater quality and help protect Fletcher's Creek and the broader Credit River watershed. The project will also explore opportunities to enhance local wildlife habitat and recreational amenities, including the Fletcher's Creek Recreational Trail.

Background

The Van Kirk outfall, constructed in 2004, currently receives stormwater runoff from a 133-hectare catchment. Approximately 74 per cent of the area is made up of hard surfaces, such as roads, rooftops and parking lots, where rain and melted snow cannot easily soak into the ground. Runoff from this area drains to Fletcher's Creek, a tributary of the Credit River.

As part of the City's Stormwater Pond Retrofit and Enhancement Study, the Van Kirk outfall was identified as a key location to enhance stormwater quality and address erosion concerns.

Design options are currently being evaluated to reduce the amount of sediment and pollutants being carried into the creek. The goal is to remove up to 80 per cent of suspended sediment and other particles from stormwater before it reaches the creek.

The design process considers existing site conditions such as limited City-owned land, habitat for Redside Dace, a species at risk, nearby sanitary infrastructure and the proximity of the Fletcher's Creek Recreational Trail.

Project Overview

The City is working with Aquafor Beech Limited to carry out the project, including:

  • Evaluating retrofit alternatives based on technical, natural, social, cultural and economic factors
  • Hosting two Public Information Centres (PICs) to engage the community and gather feedback
  • Developing both preliminary and detailed design for the preferred solution
  • Securing required permits from agencies such as the Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF)
  • Preparing construction-ready drawings and tender documents

Community Meeting

The Public Information Centre has been rescheduled to January 20, 2027, to allow additional time for the project team to complete its review and prepare for the public consultation. The revised timing will help ensure the community has the information needed to provide informed feedback as the project moves forward.

Stay tuned for updates. Additional information about the Public Information Centre will be posted on this webpage.
