Stormwater Inspections, Maintenance, and Services

The City of Brampton operates and maintains the stormwater drainage system using funds from the stormwater charge to protect you, your home, and the environment from the impacts of stormwater runoff including flooding and pollution.

Inspections are important to proactively detect maintenance needs in the system, like aging infrastructure that needs replacement or clogged infrastructure that needs cleaning. The City of Brampton inspects all parts of the stormwater drainage system including storm sewers, stormwater ponds, oil-grit separators and filters, watercourses, and low impact development facilities.

The City’s 2,014 km of storm sewers vary in age and condition, some being as old as 60 years. To help find problems in storm sewers the City has a multi-year remote camera inspection program referred to as Closed-Circuit Television Program or CCTV.

Storm Sewer Maintenance

Preventative storm sewer maintenance helps protect the surrounding area by reducing the risk of storm sewer blockages. It also helps protect the City’s stormwater drainage system from expensive repair costs in the future.

Catchbasin Cleaning

Catchbasin Cleaning

The City inspects and cleans catchbasins each year to remove the stored pollutants. Inspections involve removing the grates from the surface of the road, measuring the depth of stored pollutants, and where required, removing the material using vacuum trucks

Street Sweeping

Street Sweeping

The City removes leaves and debris from roads using street sweepers to keep the streets clean and prevent debris from washing into storm sewers and the environment. Each year the Street Sweeping program removes approximately 2900 tonnes of debris, sand, and salt that would otherwise end up in the City’s stormwater drainage system.

Stormwater Pond Inspections and Maintenance

Regular stormwater pond inspections identify whether a pond needs to be retrofitted, maintained, or repaired according to current regulations for flood and water quality control. Brampton has 193 stormwater ponds that are inspected and maintained by the City. Since 2009, 74,300 cubic meters of pollutants were removed from stormwater pond cleanouts rather than draining into local rivers and creeks.

Oil Grit Separators and Filter Maintenance

Oil Grit Separators and Filter Maintenance

Stormwater oil-grit separators and filters are underground stormwater management devices that capture pollutants from stormwater runoff. By capturing these pollutants these devices help prevent pollutants from entering local rivers and creeks. The City of Brampton has 130 of these devices that require inspection and maintenance.

Floating Treatment Wetland Maintenance

Floating treatment wetlands are human-built platforms that float in stormwater ponds that help lower the water temperature and improve water quality in stormwater ponds while also supporting biodiversity and improving aesthetics.

Watercourse Inspections

Watercourse Inspections

More than 400 km of watercourses flow through Brampton. Watercourses include rivers, streams, and engineered channels. They are part of the City’s stormwater drainage system because they convey stormwater runoff during extreme rainfall events to keep people and properties safe from flooding.
