Black Economic, Social, Cultural and Youth Development Unit
In June 2020, Brampton City Council directed staff to create the Black African and Caribbean Social, Cultural and Economic Empowerment & Anti-Black Racism Unit. The mandate of the Unit is to develop an action plan to eradicate the systemic anti-Black racism in the City of Brampton and uplift the social, cultural and economic position of the Black community through effective consultation, conversation, and engagement. The Unit is working collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders to determine areas of improvement, advance the black community and work towards eliminating anti-Black racism in the city.
The Unit is responsible for Black economic advancement, social, cultural and youth development programs. As well as supporting Black youth in education, create equal employment opportunities, sports and entrepreneurship. These efforts can shift critical consciousness of the Black community and increase their equitable access to resources and opportunities that facilitate 47 per cent economic growth for the city. In addition, the Unit supports community stakeholders and relevant government institutions to build a shared understanding of possible interventions and outcomes for the improvement of the City of Brampton.
