The Black Empowerment Unit leads the City of Brampton’s efforts to address Anti-Black Racism (ABR) and empower Black residents through civic, cultural youth, social and economic development. We work to dismantle systemic barriers embedded in Canadian institutions, foster intersectional advocacy and uplift the future generation.
Our work recognizes that addressing ABR is not just a matter of equity – it is also an economic imperative. Canada risks losing up to $1.5 trillion in potential consumption and investment by 2028 due to persistent racial wealth gaps. Locally, Brampton’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could grow by 1.5%, a $3.6 billion boost, if we reduce racial disparities in employment, wages and education.
We are designing and implementing programs to:
- Advance Black economic development for founders, investors and business owners.
- Strengthen youth leadership in areas such as STEAM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), entrepreneurship and social development.
- Support Black cultural expression and encourage creativity and innovation.
- Build financial capability and growth, not just literacy.
