Fire

The best way to combat a fire is through prevention. Ensure your family has a home escape plan that is practiced, working smoke alarms on every level and a working carbon monoxide alarm outside every sleeping area.

Do:

  • If you wake up and smell smoke, get on the floor and crawl to the nearest fire exit or window.
  • Stay low to the floor. The air is clearer and easier to breathe.
  • If your clothes catch on fire, always Stop, Drop, and Roll while covering your face.
  • Have and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
  • Test your smoke alarm monthly.

Don’t:

  • If you smell smoke, NEVER open a door until you have checked it for heat. If the door is warm, get out another way.
  • Don’t play with matches and lighters, and don’t leave fire places or candles unattended.
  • Don't stay if there is a fire in your house. Get out as quickly as possible.
  • If you live in an apartment building, DON'T use the elevator to get away from the fire. The stairs are faster and safer.
