The City of Brampton’s
Animal Services By-law 201-2023 includes mandatory standards of care to ensure animals are treated humanely and receive adequate and appropriate care.
Everyone who owns an animal is required to provide it with adequate:
- Shade during warm weather
- Sanitary conditions
Pets cannot be left outdoors during extreme weather except for brief walks or exercise unless the animal has access to adequate shelter. Some breeds can live outside during winter with proper shelter.
Tethers must be at least 3 metres or 9.84 feet, allowing the dog to move safely and unrestricted. The animal must have access to appropriate food, water, shelter and shade.
Animals cannot be left unattended in automobiles if weather conditions are not suitable and may cause the animal distress.
Animals must have suitable ventilation and be restrained to prevent contact between the animal and the public.
In addition to municipal by-laws, everyone is required to comply with the
Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act. Contact
Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9-ANIMAL if you observe an animal being abused or neglected.
