Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) FAQs

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) is an automated system that uses a camera and a speed measurement device to enforce speed limits. It is a traffic calming tool designed to make roads safer for all users by capturing images of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit in community safety zones.

Following the Building a More Competitive Economy Act, 2025, provincial legislation that prohibits the use of speed cameras in Ontario, municipalities are no longer permitted to operate ASE. As of November 14, 2025, ASE cameras in Brampton no longer issue tickets.

The City is exploring opportunities to repurpose existing ASE equipment for future community safety initiatives. While specific plans are still under review, this approach allows Brampton to continue using technology responsibly to keep streets safe.

To meet provincial requirements, the City is installing new large school-zone signs with flashing beacons to alert drivers and encourage compliance.

Yes. Community Safety Zones remain in effect. These areas help protect vulnerable road users by reinforcing safe speeds and road safety awareness.

Brampton will continue to keep streets safe through intersection camera enforcement, neighbourhood traffic calming, school zone safety initiatives, speed display boards and education programs, and police enforcement. The City remains focused on protecting all road users and ensuring safe streets across our community.

Yes. Any ASE ticket issued in Brampton before November 14, 2025 remains valid. Residents must pay or dispute these tickets.

Yes, you can authorize someone to make a payment on your behalf if they have the following information:

  • The ticket number
  • The licence plate number

The registered owner of the vehicle, or the person named on the ticket, can request a Screening or Hearing Review and attend the scheduled appointment, either in person or virtually. You may also have a representative attend an in-person Screening or Hearing review on their behalf, such as a paralegal or a relative. Confirmation of permission to act on their behalf may be requested.

Yes. Once your credit card payment has been successfully processed, a screen with the payment details along with a receipt number will be displayed. Click on the “Print Receipt” button at the bottom of the screen to print a copy for your records.

Yes, as the registered owner of the vehicle, you are responsible for the penalty, regardless of who was driving at the time of the violation. Under the Highway Traffic Act, vehicle owners can be held accountable for how their vehicles are used. This is known as an owner liability offence. The penalty notice is issued to the registered plate holder, as images captured by ASE systems typically only capture the rear view of the vehicle and its licence plate, not the driver.

If a ticket is not appealed or paid within 30 days, it will be affirmed - meaning the penalty will be confirmed and considered final. Failure to pay a ticket results in additional administrative fees. In addition, past due penalties will be sent to the Ontario Registrar of Motor Vehicles, who will deny the renewal of existing or the issuance of new vehicle licence plates.

The ticket number can be found at the top of the ticket.

If you experience any technical difficulties, it is important to notify our team immediately. We will provide you with the necessary steps and support to resolve the issue. Detailed instructions are also included on the ticket for your convenience.

If your vehicle was stolen or you sold your vehicle, you are responsible for notifying the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). You must deregister your plate to ensure that you are not held accountable for any violations that occur after the transfer of ownership or theft. If your vehicle was stolen, you will be required to provide a copy of the police report as part of the process.
