The Sign By-law sets rules for where and how signs can be displayed across the City of Brampton to support safe, clean and well-maintained neighbourhoods.
Most signs require a permit. However, some signs are exempt, including real estate, open house signs and election signs. Even when a permit is not required, all signs must still follow City rules for placement, size and safety.
Nuisance signs are not permitted anywhere in the City. This includes unauthorized signs placed on streetlight poles, traffic signs, mailboxes and boulevards. They can create visual clutter, distract drivers and pedestrians, obstruct public spaces and contribute to litter in neighbourhoods.
Signs on Private Property
Some signs are permitted on private property, including real estate and election signs. All signs require the property owner’s permission and must comply with City rules related to size, placement and safety.
Election Signs (2026 Municipal Election)
Election signs are permitted during specific election periods but must follow the rules set out in the Election Signs By-law.
For the 2026 Municipal Election:
- Election signs may be displayed starting at 5:00 p.m. on October 2, 2026
- All signs must be removed by 7:59 p.m. on October 29, 2026
Election signs must not:
- Be placed on public property including road allowances
- Be illuminated, animated or digital
- Display the City of Brampton logo or municipal election logo
- Be placed on vacant or undeveloped land
- Be attached to trees, fences, construction hoarding, building walls, utility poles, hydro poles, light standards or other infrastructure
- Obstruct visibility or create safety hazards
Size and height requirements include:
- Maximum size of 2 square metres (21.5 sq. ft.)
- Maximum height of 1.5 metres (4.9 ft.) on residential properties
- Maximum height of 3.6 metres (12 ft.) on non-residential properties
Placement limits:
- Up to one sign per candidate or third-party advertiser per residential property
- Up to three signs per candidate or third-party advertiser per non-residential property
Property owner consent must be obtained before placing any election sign.
Election signs that do not follow these rules may be removed by the City. Signs may be stored for up to 30 days and then disposed of if not claimed.
Storage
Signs removed by the City will be stored for 30 days. During this period, sign owners may request their signs be returned by contacting Enforcement and By-law Services to schedule an appointment.
A $50 fee applies for each appointment where signs are returned, in accordance with the City’s User Fee By-law. After the 30-day storage period, unclaimed signs may be disposed of by the City.
Sign Permits
Most signs displayed on private property require a permit.
A permit is required when you:
- install a new sign, including ground, wall, roof or mobile signs
- replace an existing sign with one that changes in size or design
- install a temporary sign, such as a banner, development sign or mobile sign
Before applying for a sign permit:
- review the Sign By-law to ensure your sign meets City requirements
- obtain permission from the property owner or landlord
- prepare drawings showing the sign dimensions
Apply online through the Brampton Building and Business Portal.

Enforcement
The City actively monitors signage across Brampton to ensure compliance with the Sign By-law.
Signs that are not permitted or that do not meet by-law requirements may be removed. In some cases, penalties or fees may apply.
These measures help maintain safe roadways, accessible public spaces and clean neighbourhoods across the city.
