Skating FAQ

Bob skates are designed to help younger participants gain more confidence on the ice. Double bladed skates that are strapped to regular footwear and offer a more stable platform for beginners. They can be used during Public Skates and Beginner Skates. Bob Skates are not permitted during Learn to Skate programs, Figure Skating programs, and Shinny or Hockey Shoot around programs.​

  • No, skate and helmet rentals are not available during skate lessons.

  • ​A proper fit for hockey skates should fit 1-1.5 sizes smaller than your street shoes. Your toes should barely touch the toe cap, while having no more than 1/4 inch of space in the heel. When you're finished lacing up your skates, they should feel snug with the foot resting flat on the footbed.

  • ​Program participants of all ages, are required to bring their own Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved hockey helmet. A full face mask/cage is also recommended. 
  • View a video tutorial​ on properly fitting a helmet.  
  • Single bladed skates are required and must be sharpened prior to the first class.
  • Participants should dress for the colder environment which include items such as a jacket, slush or snow pants, and mittens or gloves.

  • ​Hockey Shoot Around
    • An open practice where participants can run self-directed drills focusing on basic stick handling, shooting and skating skills. No game or scrimmage will be played.
  • Shinny Programs
    • Non-contact drop in hockey scrimmage played without any formal rules or specifically assigned positions.
  • Figure Skate (8+ Years) 
    • For experienced figure skaters to individually practice their spins, jumps and the fundamentals of figure skating.
  • Public Skates
    • Informal drop-in session where participants can come to skate.
  • Beginner Skate (All Ages) 
    • ​For beginners of any age and those with accessibility needs to come and practice their skating skills.

Occasionally lessons may be cancelled due to mechanical or chemical issues. We will do our best to compensate you for your lost program time.   

Make-up classes or compensation will not be available due to participant illness or personal commitments. ​


  • Private lessons and coaching on the ice is strictly prohibited.  
  • No horseplay. 
  • No spraying or throwing snow. 
  • No food or drinks in glass containers, headsets, cellphone, or other handheld electronic devices are permitted on the ice. 
  • No carrying of others (e.g. babies or young children) while on the ice surface. 
  • Participants are not permitted on the ice while the ice resurfacer is in operation. 
  • All accidents or injuries must be reported to staff immediately. 
  • Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved hockey helmets are required during all Shinny and Hockey Shoot Around programs and is recommended for Public Skate programs. 
  • The City of Brampton Good Behaviour Guidelines​ must be adhered to at all times.  ​

​Inline Skating, often called rollerblading, is a sport involving moving on wheels arranged in a single line under a boot, designed for smooth and efficient movement.  

Inline Skating is performed on solid ground, not on an ice surface.
